CDMS Engineering have an extensive history of providing design services for steel and concrete structures. CDMS has experience in designing steel structures across all weight ranges, from large mining structures and modules to tank bridges and pipe racks. Some examples include gravity towers, crushing and screening buildings, leeching and detox bridges, stair towers, fin fan coolers and stacks, to name a few.
CDMS has in-house capability for the design of steel and concrete structures for dynamic loading, such as crusher footings, mill foundations, and steel structures with mounted vibrating equipment. The advanced analysis team can design in-line with acceptable frequency ranges, based on a variety of national and international standards, including frequency response to check for acceptable displacements and accelerations suitable for plant and personnel.
The product design teams at CDMS work to develop modularised skid mounted equipment that can significantly reduce install times, with all the associated skid structures, as well as all onshore and offshore lifting, designed by our team of skilled structural engineers. Pipe supports and large pipe racks are standard designs, as well as the design of custom pipe anchors and shoes developed in combination with our mechanical engineering team.
CDMS also has experience with the structural design of plant equipment and buildings, such as trusses for conveyors, stackers and reclaimers, trestle supports, elevated tanks and silos, workshops, and stockpile covers and tunnels. Design of plate and weldment structures, like chutes, hoppers, bins, and tanks, can be handled by our structural teams to account for the full range of site applications.
Topside modifications often come about when an additional need has been identified on an existing platform and the current layout needs to be changed to suit the new configurations. Even a relatively small modification or addition to plant equipment can require very specialist engineering design capabilities. CDMS has had a considerable amount of experience in these types of designs, ensuring new modifications transition seamlessly into the existing superstructure.
There are many design standards for offshore structures and depending on the rig or work vessel owner, as well as the operator in some cases , the correct design standard must be used. CDMS has experience working on a range of semi-submersible, jack-up and fixed platform rigs, along with a variety of Floating Production, and storage and off-loading (FPSO) vessels and other work vessels, all to a variety of standards, such as DNV, ABS, Lloyds, API, and ISO.
Working to these standards, CDMS can assist our clients in the determination of allowable deck loads, transport loads, protective coatings, and material selection. CDMS will check that all of the new loads into the deck are within allowable code limits such as DNV-OS-C1102, and will work in existing deck loads to ensure that the deck can still meet its original design rating, as well as specifying and ensuring any test loads, for items like deck mounted pump hang-off frames and Launch and Recovery Systems (LARS) are correctly designed for.
CDMS can do both the mechanical and structural design and detail fabrication drawings of all site modifications. Our experienced design team can illustrate exactly how new equipment and structures will integrate into and around all existing plant piping and steelwork. Offshore design checks usually need to cater for FPSO vessels where complex fatigue conditions require significant specialist analysis, while fatigue conditions can take about four times as long for conventional static load cases. CDMS has also designed garaging and mounting frames for LARS and operator control rooms for Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) submarines, hang-off frames used for submarine pump deployment and various other equipment items such as winch mounting, spooling devices, and grab mounts for dredgers.
CDMS has experience in designing subsea lifting frames that involve multi-stage deployment below sea level. We can design, based upon sling tension, to prevent twisting and fouling of the slings while underwater to the DNV specification DNV-2.6, obtain recommendations from DNV-RP-C205, and use other relevant standards. Past projects include the design of an ROV submersible inspection tool and housing garage, where the two were lowered as a unit and allowed docking of the ROV to remove the inspection tool so the garage could be safely removed from the water, where the design was also fully DNV 2.7-1 compliant. Additional subsea structures include design checks for monorail and subsea frames as well as verification of subsea crane rails on piping manifolds and subsea lugs.
Footing and Slab Design
CDMS has had a large amount of experience in designing all types of concrete slabs and footings, such as one-way/two-way slabs, strip footings, spread footings, combined footing and raft footing. We design them as per Australian Standard AS 3600. CDMS has designed footings/slabs for thickeners, tanks, stockpile roof structures, silos, walkway platforms, decant structures, and heat exchangers. CDMS also has a specialty in designing structural footings subject to equipment vibrational loadings using advanced finite element analysis (FEA) packages.
