Fuel Handling & Storage

Over the years CDMS Engineering has had an extensive experience in designing and detailing a number of fuel handling equipment, storage tanks, and tank farms for bulk fuel installations. Our experience with most forms of fuel handling and storage will ensure the quality and timely delivery of your project.

Storage Tanks

CDMS designs to a number of standards, such as AS1692, AP1620, and AP1650 with diameters ranging from 1.5 metres in diameter to over 30 metres. CDMS has also have experience in the design of horizontal cylindrical tanks with custom sizes or high loading not covered by AS1692, as well a self-bunded tanks compliant with AS1940 and UL standards, through to rectangular and container tanks.

CDMS has an in-depth understanding in all aspects of tank design, such as material selection requirements, cyclonic wind loading, seismic design, as well as specific tank elements such as roof structure design, footing design, and the design of hold-down chairs. Our office has developed a number of in-house programs to create smart and efficient designs. Additionally we have extensive experience with repairs of tanks to AP1653 and have assisted in the design and detailing of jacking large diameter tanks for removal and replacement of corroded floor plates.

Fuel Handling Equipment

The engineers at CDMS are experienced in the process requirements for fuel handling and dispensing systems. We can perform flow calculations for pump selection and line sizing, as well as size and select suitable piping and dispensing equipment. Selection of pump bypass valves and thermal relief valves for normally closed valves is standard practice.

Pipe stress analysis can be included in the design for compliance with AS4041 or ASME B31.3 where required by the code or specifically requested by the client. Aside from piping compliance, pipe flexibility analysis is commonly used by CDMS to check for pipe nozzle loading on tanks and pumps that are often overlooked by some designers. Poorly designed or supported piping systems can lead to cracking at tank and vessel nozzles, as well as damage to pump bearings.

Pipe stress operating outputs can be used by the CDMS structural engineers to design pipe supports that are adequate for the loads and provide sufficient clearances for flexibility. Where highly loaded, the engineers utilise FEA to check the attachment at shoe supports and can design the concrete footings for pipe supports and anchors in-house.

CDMS can also design rail loading and unloading systems for mine fuel facilities and gantry upgrades through to complete fuel terminal design. The team has designed turnkey mobile refuelling stations as well as modular tank farms. From commercial terminals, to mine fuel facilities and defence fuel installations, CDMS can handle the full range of fuel system design.

Storage & Containment

Building on our tank design expertise, CDMS has the capability to provide complete tank farm and fuel storage and handling facility design. This includes spacing layouts, civil/structural design of earth and concrete bunds incorporating drainage, lining, penetration design, and capacity calculations. The CDMS team have detailed knowledge of AS 1940 as well as defence standards such as MIEBFI-D, MIEE, MFPE, and BFIMI.

As mentioned CDMS can ensure adequate spill protection at transfer points, and design secondary containment for tanks in the form of earth or concrete bunds. With the in-house civil capability, CDMS can incorporate all contaminated bund drainage as well as site storm water on hardstands. This can incorporate design of evaporation ponds as well as oil and water interceptors as required.

All fuel facilities require fire protection and CDMS can design the ring main, risers and hydrants, select booster pumps, as well as perform hydraulic analysis to determine the flows and pressures at all hydrants, and fully document and detail the system for compliance with AS 1940, AS 2419.1, and AS 4041.

The highly skilled team at CDMS can audit and review your existing installations for code compliance and provide recommendations for retrofits to ensure compliance with the latest standards. We also have completed design verification work for fuel handling and containment, piping, dispensing, bunding, fire protection and spacing layouts for companies such as FMG, Citic Pacific, Downer Edi Mining, BP Australia, Worley Parsons, Rio Tinto, Decmil, and the Department of Defence.

DG Approvals & Hazardous Area Assessment

CDMS can assist with development of hazardous area classification zones and development or updates to hazardous area classification (HAC) reports. The experienced team of electrical engineers can provide functional safety assessments (TUV certified) to ensure controls and operator systems are in place to maintain the overall safety of the equipment or hazardous area installation with regards to accepted risk guidelines. The engineers can inspect the installation according to AS 660079.17 and review the equipment and installation for compliance with AS 3000 and AS 60079.14, followed by preparation of or update to a Hazardous Area Verification Dossier (HAVD). Working with certified dangerous goods (DG) assessors, CDMS can include all compliance requirements for smooth handover to operators.
