Project Brief

Outcome

The project outcomes include a comprehensive understanding of the impact of design changes on the cooling tower performance. This will enable stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding the modifications and ensure the continued efficient operation of the tower. Additionally, the project may result in recommendations for further improvements or adjustments to optimize the tower’s performance.

Background

The project involves the redesign of the spray cooling tower at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, located approximately 20 km southeast of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia. The smelter, operational since 1973, utilizes a flash smelting method to produce granulated nickel matte containing nickel, copper, and cobalt. The matte is transported to the Kwinana Nickel Refinery for further processing and export. Currently, the smelter produces 100,000-110,000 tonnes of nickel-in-matte annually, supplemented by 35,000-40,000 tonnes of nickel-in-concentrate from the Kambalda Nickel Concentrator.

Project Objectives

The primary objective is to assess the impact of minor internal design changes on the performance of the spray cooling tower. This involves conducting a high-level process review to ensure proper vapour and liquid flow distribution and to maintain optimal efficiency of the tower. The project aims to identify any potential issues arising from the modifications and propose solutions to mitigate them.

Challenges

Key challenges include accurately assessing the impact of minor design changes on the complex dynamics of vapour and liquid flows within the cooling tower. Ensuring that the tower continues to meet operational requirements and regulatory standards despite modifications is also a significant challenge. Additionally, coordinating with stakeholders and implementing any necessary changes while minimizing disruption to ongoing operations pose challenges.

Our Approach

Our approach involves conducting a high-level process review to assess the impact of design changes on the cooling tower’s performance. This includes evaluating vapour and liquid flow distribution, tray efficiencies, pressure drops, and other critical factors. We will collaborate closely with stakeholders to identify any potential issues and propose solutions to address them. Our approach prioritizes thorough analysis, proactive problem-solving, and effective communication to ensure the successful outcome of the project.
