Project Brief
Outcome
The Butler Park Potable Water Pipe Replacement Program aims to enhance reliability, safety, and efficiency at the Gorgon LNG Facility. By replacing corroded stainless-steel pipework with non-metallic materials, the project mitigates leaks, improves system reliability, and reduces maintenance costs. This initiative aligns with environmental goals, ensuring a sustainable and cost-effective water supply infrastructure for long-term operations.
Background
The Butler Park Potable Water Pipe Replacement Program was a critical initiative undertaken for the Gorgon LNG Facility on Barrow Island. Butler Park served as the primary residential facility for the Gorgon Project, accommodating over 4,900 individuals and providing essential amenities such as offices, recreational areas, and swimming pools. The water supply system at Butler Park relied on a Reverse Osmosis plant, with potable water distributed through above-ground stainless steel pipework. However, extensive corrosion issues were identified in the existing pipework, necessitating urgent replacement to maintain uninterrupted water supply.
Project Objectives
The primary objective of the project was to replace the above-ground stainless steel pipework in the Butler Park Potable Water Supply System with non-metallic material insulated against UV damage and heat. CDMS aimed to provide design and engineering services to support M Maintenance Services Pty Ltd in successfully executing this replacement program. Our goals included offering innovative solutions, leveraging our experience and knowledge in this domain, adding value to the project by introducing novel concepts, and fostering a long-term partnership with the client.
Challenges
The corroded stainless-steel pipework posed significant operational risks, including leaks and potential failure, which could disrupt water supply to Butler Park and impact the Gorgon Project’s operations. Two primary corrosion mechanisms were identified: galvanic corrosion due to inadequate passivation during fabrication and installation, and microbial-induced corrosion, particularly from Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRB). Addressing these challenges required meticulous planning, innovative solutions, and adherence to stringent safety and environmental standards.
Our Approach
CDMS adopted a proactive and collaborative approach to address the challenges posed by the corroded pipework. Our team worked closely with M Maintenance Services Pty Ltd to develop comprehensive design and engineering solutions tailored to the specific requirements of the project. By leveraging our expertise and industry insights, we identified and implemented innovative approaches to pipework replacement, ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of the Butler Park Potable Water Supply System. Through effective communication and transparent project management, we exceeded client expectations and delivered sustainable outcomes.
